Alphatude and Staying Centered
Here is a thought from the world of horses being centered is similar to Alphatude-a woman that knows what she wants.

"The core of our program involves the concept of being centered.

Beginning with a simple exercise I call The Wheel, we move the horses around a small square arena in a circle. In the center of the circle is a marker (hula hoop, cone, etc) and the task of the person is to move the horse in a circle, staying between the center and the horse.

"More attention must be given to one's own position than to the horse, but if this is done well the horse will stay on the circle. "

"The idea is that we are able to positively influence others (dog, horses, people) by staying aware of our own center, and holding that position. "

"I take this illustration of being centered and staying in position and apply it to all scenarios. If something doesn't go as desired with the horse or dog or person, it is usually because we have not stayed in position. This takes the energy away from blaming the other and puts it on perfecting ourselves."

The "center" may not be a hula hoop, it may be our inner peace and happiness, it may be our position while leading the horse, or walking the dog. It becomes a challenge to "stay in position and stay centered."

Staying centered in human relationships may mean staying calm and patient, sticking to principles (peer pressure), not backing down or being "wishy washy" (establishing consistent guidelines as parents), and ALWAYS putting the energy on perfecting yourself amid life's challenges, rather than blaming external factors such as the dog, the horse, the other person.

I think applying these principles to human-dog relationships is a big challenge, but, I believe it works."

Healthy Lifestyle is More Important Than Weight: While popular media tends to equate being thin with being healthy, a number of professional associations dedicated to fighting eating disorders have unanimously declared that a healthy lifestyle is far more important than one's weight or Body Mass Index (BMI). The Academy for Eating Disorders (AED), Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA), Eating Disorder Coalition (EDC), International Association for Eating Disorder Professionals (IADEP), and National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) all feel that the attention on BMI creates weight prejudice that can not only lead to weight discrimination and low self-esteem but can encourage poor eating habits in people who are overweight but still lead active and healthy lifestyles. "Targeting weight just isn't working," says Linda Bacon, Ph.D., nutrition professor, researcher, and author of "Health at Every Size." Bacon is also a member of the Association for Size Diversity and Health (ASDAH). " Well-intentioned as the 'war on obesity' may have been, there has been extensive collateral damage," she adds. " Food and body preoccupation, self-hatred, eating disorders, weight discrimination, poor health--few people are at peace with their bodies." What It Means: Don't sweat the number on the scale or even the measurement of your waistline. If you eat nutritiously, exercise regularly, and feel good, be happy with your health.

SERVICE DOGS FOR VETS-FINALLY

Senate approves funding for service dogs for veterans

NEWS RELEASE

Washington, D.C. – By a vote of 57-35, the Senate yesterday gave its final approval to the FY2010 Omnibus Appropriations Act, funding a key priority of Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.), which is providing service dogs to veterans with disabilities.

“We can never do too much for the men and women who risk everything to fight for their country,” said Sen. Franken. “I feel a real obligation to them for the courage they show and the sacrifices they make. I’m glad that we’ve been able to take this small step toward improving their lives when they come home.”

The Appropriations Act directs the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to immediately begin the process of assisting veterans with physical and, for the first time, mental illnesses, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), who would benefit from having a service dog. It also provides $2 million in medical services for the program and additional funds for research and VA Inspector General oversight. VA is also directed to expand its partnership with accredited nonprofit service dog organizations where veterans with PTSD help train service dogs.

“With the support of Sen. Tim Johnson (Chairman of the Military Construction/VA appropriations subcommittee), and his House counterpart Rep. Chet Edwards, the final version of the provision directs VA to include veterans with mental disabilities among those eligible to receive a service dog,” said Sen. Franken. “I am also grateful to Rep. Steve Israel, who carried this effort in the House.”

“I applaud Senator Franken for his efforts to expand VA’s service dog program. These dogs have proven to not only expand our veterans’ ability to live more fully, they also seem to have the ability to increase veterans’ morale and quality of life as well. I was happy to include this funding in the FY10 VA Appropriations bill,” said Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.Dak.), chairman of the Military Construction/Veterans Affairs (VA) Appropriations Subcommittee.

“Our veterans put their lives on the line and too often return home with physical injuries and PTSD. An expanded service dogs program for veterans will bring more of our troops the comfort and rehabilitation they need. Veterans have told me they benefit greatly from having access to service dogs, so I’m proud to join Senator Franken in increasing the scope of the service dogs for veterans program,” said Rep. Steve Israel (D – N.Y.), a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs who requested increased funding for the program.

The Service Dogs for Veterans Act was the first piece of legislation authored by Sen. Franken, with original co-sponsor Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.). It passed the Senate unanimously two weeks after he was sworn in as Minnesota’s second Senator. Sen. Franken visited the White House to see it signed in to law last month. Sunday’s approval of funding was the next step in making the provision of service dogs to veterans with disabilities a reality.

Recently, a ballot initiative was filed in Missouri against our dog breeding industry. Called the "Puppymill Cruelty Protection Act", the measure does anything but protect animals. It virtually eliminates our freedom of choice to participate in the free enterprise system and enjoy animals, regardless of the state-of-the- art care they receive. Although the HSUS has targeted other states regarding agriculture and hunting interests, this is the first ballot initiative aimed specifically at dog owners and breeders. Missouri has been extremely strong in killing their proposed legislation at the state capitol since the early 1990's, and because of that, they are planning to sway the public to vote for their measure in the November 2010 general election. They will stop at nothing to reach their goal. They have awakened a sleeping giant and we are fighting back! The agriculture groups in Missouri have come together in a massive coalition to fight their proposal and have held numerous meetings to plan strategy. For the last 18 months, I have downloaded "smoking gun" documents from the HSUS Website - - every one of the referenced documents and quotes in the Overview Summary were found on the HSUS Website, and they are now part of my 300+ page "Master File." . My trial experience as a Military Judge, Prosecutor and Defense Counsel left me with the indelible knowledge that a "Paper Trail," such as documents downloaded from the HUS Website, will often destroy the seemingly impregnable credibility of a witness, accused or adversary. . I now have a very damning "Paper Trail" that has been downloaded from the HSUS Website over the last 18 months - -the "smoking gun!" As is so true in all phases of life, "Timing is Everything." That is why the "Strategic Plan" must be executed with flawless precision in a short period of time so that HSUS will not have time to react effectively to blunt the call for an IRS investigation. For the Strategic Plan to have the best chance for optimum success, two things must occur between now and the end of December. First, several thousand letters need to be mailed to the IRS Tax Fraud Office between now and Christmas Eve. This will allow a week for me to receive copies of the Certified Mail Receipts so that I will be able to "follow-up" with the Treasury Department, which has oversight over the IRS, in early January. Second, several thousand E-Mails need to be sent to your respective two Senators and U.S. Representatives between Christmas and New Years Day. (Typically, those Offices are shut down for the Holidays or only have a skeleton crew.) Thus, when they open up for business after the First, many Members of Congress will be briefed by their staffs about "all of the E-mails received from constituents concerning the HSUS." "NUMBERS MATTER" AND THE SHOCK EFFECT OF SO MANY E-MAILS, EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE BOILERPLATE (This is an exception to the general rule not to send form letters), WILL BE "ATTENTION GETTERS," AND MAY RESULT IN AT LEAST SEVERAL MEMBERS OF CONGRESS CONTACTING THE IRS AND ASKING THAT IT INVESTIGATE THE LOBBY ACTIVITIES OF THE HSUS. Thus, we will have two "waves" hitting the IRS in a period of 2-3 weeks, and if the IRS does not promptly act, we will have the "Certified Mail Receipt Documentation" and the opportunity to escalate the "Lobbying" issue to a more senior level in the Treasury Department that has oversight over the IRS. Reflect for a moment on this thought: If HSUS has to defend its actions against the IRS, it will throw the HSUS off it "game" at the Beginning of the Year when it plans to go full court press at the Federal Level, as well as at the State Level - - a potential mega-momentum changer! I would appreciate if you would consider taking 60 minutes of your time to try and neuter and spay the HSUS by downloading the three attachments; finalizing a boilerplate letter to the IRS Tax Fraud Office and sending the letter by Certified Mail; sending boilerplate E-Mails to your respective three Members of Congress; and then sending me a copy of the Certified Mail Receipt. As it happens, we have a contact, a professional who is an expert on exactly this issue -- the tax status of non-profit corporations. Trust me, this person KNOWS how these things work. We asked this individual about this campaign. Here are paraphrases of the responses to several specific questions: ============ ======== Q. Does the IRS care about these things? A. Yes, ABSOLUTELY. EVERY complaint about abuse of the tax code must be investigated. Q. Isn't it enough to just poke the IRS once or twice and let them take it from there? A. NO, that isn't a good approach. With one or two complaints it can be like cleaning up your bathroom closet: You know you ought to do it, but if you don't get to it today, nothing terrible will happen and you've got more important stuff to do. But then tomorrow, some other crisis comes along ... maybe you'll never get to hanging up the toilet brush and picking up the Tidy Bowl bottle at all .... The more letters the IRS gets complaining about a specific problem corporation, the more likely they are to take action. Q. So more complaints means more certain and faster action. A. Yes. But it goes beyond 'more certain and faster.' The more complaints there are, the higher the level at which the problems will be considered. If there is a serious problem, you WANT high level attention because that's where the big decisions get made. Get those top managers on board with thousands of letters and if the complaint is found to be justified, the top levels can and will do more. It is the IRS's job to collect taxes. Nothing pleases them more than to find a real tax cheat, turn him upside down and shake. Top management shakes a lot harder than lower levels. Q. Do we have to get our contacts (letters, etc.) exactly right? A. The IRS are professionals. Tell them about the problems (in this case your view that a corporation claiming to be a charity is nothing of the sort), give them whatever you have, and they will take it from there. Even stories are good, as long as they describe significant actions by the corporation that do not represent a valid charitable purpose. When telling stories, DO focus on the specific corporation and be as clear as you can about what they're doing, but DON'T feel that if your format isn't perfect or a word is misspelled, they'll toss your complaint. Q. What if I don't have any new facts? A. Then just tell the IRS that in your opinion this corporation does not meet the guidelines for a charitable exemption. Again, NUMBERS COUNT.
